Kenneth Anger: A Godfather of Homoerotic Cinema

For those who hold an understanding for influential experimental films will definitely know the Kenneth Anger. Being an independent American filmmaker, he is popularly known as Cult filmmaker for making some of the wildest yet experimental short films. Some of his films and works are so appreciated that they have been regarded as collection of modern art in various museums. Many people from Hollywood and art industry consider him as a godfather of homoerotic cinema. Many people find his work crazy yet gorgeous but disturbing. Unlike other filmmaker, he does not use narrative based style for his art. Rather he explores the lyrical themes to showcase his piece of arts in form of small video clips and short films. In short, he loves to substitute dialogues with music in his films.

Apart from being a filmmaker he is also an actor and author. Surprisingly he was introduced to the world of art by his grandmother who used to take him to the art galleries and exhibitions when he was a child. Born in 1937, even today at the age of 93 his work in form of clips and stills is toured worldwide in form of art installations. Till now his work has been exhibited widely around the world’s most renowned museums and art galleries. Some of his popular showcases are:

           - During this exhibition his early iconic work like Scorpio Rising, Inauguration of Pleasure                   Dome, Lucifer Rising etc were exhibited.

• Spruth Magers Gallery, London in year 2010

           - At this gallery his show featured his film- Invocation of My Demon Brother.

Even after being so famous and popular he still finds it hard to finance his films. It is then when he starts writing his thoughts in form of book. As an author, his two most talked about gossip digests are:

• Hollywood Babylon 2

Not just his films, it is his books are that have been found disputed and landed him in trouble. But even after all this nothing has stopped him from showcasing his mind’s creativity. Till his80s he could be seen filming and creating short films. Known to be an influential and pioneering force in avant-garde cinema he has inspired all those who have fond liking for ground breaking cinema.
